In that case, you’d better have solid insurance. In this article, we discuss the contents of and possible need for Civil Liability Insurance for a speed pedelec. What is included in the insurance of the lease?

If you lease a bike through Cycle Valley, we provide insurance for the bike and lockable accessories. This according to the General Terms and Conditions of the insurance company. Below you will find the most important aspects listed:

  • Theft insurance
    The bike is internationally insured against theft as long as the bike is locked with an ART2 approved bike lock.
  • Damage insurance
    The bike is internationally insured against damage according to the General Conditions of your insurer.

So we provide full coverage for the lease bike and all lockable accessories.

What is a civil liability insurance?

Civil liability insurance protects you from the costs of damages you accidentally cause to others. Some examples:

  • Property damage: for example, a scratch on another bike.
  • Personal injury: if you accidentally hit someone.
  • Legal costs: the costs related to a court case.

However, this is already offered within your family insurance.

Is it compulsory to have civil liability insurance?

Civil liability insurance is only mandatory in Belgium for speed pedelecs that can propel autonomously (without pedaling). However, these models are not allowed to lease in our bike lease program.

Please note that different laws may apply abroad. For example, in the Netherlands it is mandatory to have civil liability insurance for a speed pedelec. If you will be using the speed pedelec abroad, you should therefore could need a civil liability insurance via Cycle Valley.
