Bikeleasing for schools

Starting in 2025, teachers and other education personnel in Flanders will be able to lease a bike via their school or educational institution.

Explore the various options here!

Cycle Valley will guide your school toward a hassle-free customized bike lease plan.

1. What is bike leasing in education?

As of 2025, teachers and other education personnel in Flanders can lease a bike via their school or educational institution by using (part of) their end-of-year bonus. This makes it possible to lease a bike in a cost-effective and tax-efficient way, which is more advantageous than buying a bike themselves with net wages.

Whether you want an e-bike, a sporty road bike, or even a cargo bike, the choice is yours – and at an attractive tax rate!

2. Which schools can offer bike leasing?

Whether you work in primary education, secondary education, at a college or university, most Flemish educational institutions can offer bike leasing. This also applies to other educational groups such as arts or adult education. French-speaking educational institutions currently cannot offer bike leasing yet.

3. Why should you offer bike leasing as a school?

Why not? It is affordable, sustainable and very much of the present. A few additional reasons to start right away:

  • Cost neutral for the school board, so it costs nothing.
  • It offers tax benefits for teachers.
  • Promotes a more sustainable and healthier lifestyle.
  • Fewer (car) parking problems.
  • Plus, cycling improves the mental and physical health of your staff. A win-win-win!

4. How does bike leasing work for teachers?

The process is very simple:

  • From Jan. 1 2025, permanent teachers can use their end-of-year bonus to lease a bicycle.
  • If you lease a bike, you pay for it via your gross end-of-year bonus, which is cheaper than buying a bike yourself. No worries about maintenance or insurance, that’s all included in the lease package.
  • Do you have a specific dream bike in mind? No problem, you choose which type and brand of bike you want.
  • If the teacher’s end-of-year bonus is insufficient, he or she can pay the difference using his or her own resources.

5. How does teaching staff finance a lease bike?

Teachers use (part of) their gross end-of-year bonus for the lease of the bike. If the end-of-year bonus is not sufficient to cover the entire lease, a personal contribution can be made. At the end of the lease term, the bicycle can be returned free of charge or taken over at the previously communicated residual value.

6. Why would you lease a bike as a teacher? What are the advantages?

  • Tax advantages: A leased bike is more advantageous than buying one yourself because of the payment with the gross year-end bonus.
  • Right of use: As a teacher, you get the right to use the leased bike, but it remains the property of Cycle Valley. This has the advantage that we support you optimally in any unpleasant situations with bike shop, insurer and road assistance.
  • All-in-one package: From maintenance to insurance, everything is taken care of for you.
  • Healthier living: You cycle more often, move more and feel better.
  • Sustainable travel: less carbon emissions, more fresh air!

7. What are the steps to set up bike leasing for educational institutions?

  1. The school board decides to offer bike leasing.

  2. A tender is being issued for a leasing partner.

  3. A leasing partner is selected and chosen by the school board.

  4. The staff is informed about the possibilities and benefits.

  5. The lease contracts are tailor-made.

  6. Hassle-free bike leasing!

8. Are there any administrative burdens associated with bike leasing?

Cycle Valley offers automated tools to minimize administration. This includes approving orders, tracking bicycle fleets and simulating lease costs by employees themselves. A school board must perform the following:

  • Going through a tender (Cycle Valley provides support)
  • Simple approval of a lease application (once per bike)

9. Which lease bikes can be chosen?

All brands and models available at the bike shop in the Cycle Valley network. Teachers have complete freedom of choice of type, brand and model. This includes non-electric bicycles, electric bicycles, speed pedelecs, folding bicycles, mountain bikes, racing bicycles, gravel bicycles and cargo bikes.

The school has the option to establish specific conditions regarding `

  • The offered bikes (types, brands and models)
  • The lease period
  • De residual value
  • Any optional services (breakdown assistance, insurance and maintenance).

10. When should teachers decide about bike leasing?

Permanently appointed teachers must decide before 1 January 2025 whether they want to use (part of) their end-of-year bonus for a lease bike in 2025. If teachers decide to start a bike lease during 2025, this will be possible from 2026. For other teachers (temporary, non-permanent, etc.) there is currently still uncertainty.

11. Can I, as a teacher, lease a bike from multiple school boards?

No, if you work for multiple school boards, you can only lease a bike from one school board. You can also only lease one bike at a time.

12. What if my school does not offer bike leasing?

School boards are not required to offer bike leasing, but it is an attractive benefit for staff. If your school does not yet offer this, it is certainly worth talking to the school board. It does not cost the school anything extra, and it has only advantages for both the school and the teacher!

13. What do I agree to if I want to lease a bike?

With the bike policy of the school board. The bike policy can be seen as the rules of the bike lease story. In this document all agreements and possible situations with solutions are written down. After signing it is added as an addendum to the employment contract. Cycle Valley supports the school board as much as possible with the layout and possible adjustments of the document. The management and follow-up of the bike policy is also relieved by Cycle Valley for the school board.

14. As a teacher, am I still entitled to a mileage allowance for commuting?

Yes, indeed! Bike leasing has no impact on the compensation for the cycled kilometers. This way you can quickly earn back the lease bike!
